Exploring Japan with Daft Punk: A Look at Rare Photographs of the Iconic Duo from 2000’s

1

Daft Punk, the French electronic music duo consisting of Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, is widely regarded as one of the most influential acts in the world. The duo, who formed Daft Punk in 1993 after their time together in the rock band Darlin’, is known for their iconic robot personas and hit albums such as Homework (1997).

Daft Punk’s trip to Japan in 2000, where they met with their childhood idol Leiji Matsumoto, led to the creation of the anime-musical film Interstella 5555, which was released in Japan in 2003. The film was only shown in select cinemas outside of Japan, mainly in France and the US. The public got a sneak peek of the film through the music videos for the singles from the album Discovery, which ran on TV between 2000 and 2001.
